When people talk about promoting their business via Social Media, many are referring to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram, but did you know creating videos, also known as Vlogs, is a great way to help boost the visibility, and credibility of your business?
Generally people prefer a passive cognitive experience[1] - that is they may be more likely to watch a video about how your business can help them, rather than read about it. In fact using Vlogs to help sell products can increase purchases by 144%, and almost 50% of internet users look for videos related to a product or service before visiting a store.[2]
Vlogs are also the perfect way for your audience to get to know you. They allow you to show your personality, which can help you boost your credibility and client trust, and can be shared on multiple channels, expanding your reach, from YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and click through to your website.
What you can Vlog about is endless, but here are just a few suggestions:
Tip: As an adviser there are many compliance issues that you need to be mindful of. Try as much as possible to talk about high level concepts, rather than actual strategy and products. It’s also recommended that you include a general advice disclaimer on all your Vlogs.
YouTube statistics have shown that the top 10 most popular YouTube videos ranged from 42 seconds, to 9 minutes, with an average of 4 minutes[3], so basically to hold your clients attention, the shorter the better.
While it’s not necessarily important on how often you make a new Vlog, what is important is consistency – so make a schedule (e.g. weekly, fortnightly or monthly) stick to it, and make sure you are posting content that your clients want to watch.
Gone are the days where you need to pay an agency $25k for a polished video (well – you still can, but seriously why would you?) Not only are professional cameras more affordable – but the software to edit and distribute is much cheaper.
If you’re just starting out you can even just use your smart phone or camera on your laptop, before you make any investment in new technology. As a rule of thumb aim to make and share about 25 videos before you decide if you want to make a further investment.
XY Adviser is a great place to start, where you can learn more about what technology is available, and what other advisers who are already Vlogging are doing. You can connect with XY Adviser at www.xyadviser.com, as well as join their Facebook group.
