In 2022, the Australian Governments Cancer Australia page published that an estimated 17,756 people will be diagnosed with melanoma with an estimated 1,281 deaths¹.

 

While Melanoma ranks third amongst Australians as the most diagnosed cancer in 2022, it ranked tenth for deaths². While many have not been so lucky to survive this disease, better education, and persistent messaging such as ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ have helped raise awareness of this disease, leading to greater awareness from a younger age. This has also meant we are more mindful of what to look out for on our skin which has led to earlier melanoma intervention.

As mentioned, awareness campaigns such as ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ from the 1980s and continued discussions have increased awareness and safety measures.

Cancer Australia analysed two age cohorts, those who developed skin cancer by the age of 30s and 60s².
 

While those in their 60s have been exposed to the suns impact for a longer period of time without the same messaging that has been experienced by those in their 30s, the risk of being diagnosed has stabilised over the last decade, with a consistent reduction in deaths².
 

For those in their 30s, the risk of being diagnosed with melanoma has significantly reduced since 1997 and the chances of death have also consistently declined².

With AIA Priority Protection Crisis Recovery, your clients are covered whether they have an Early Stage melanoma or Stage 4, provided it meets the definition as outlined in the AIA Priority Protection Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). And should they want the added protection, they can apply for Crisis Extension which covers melanomas that are Stage 3 or 4.
 

With a mix of Crisis Recovery and Crisis Extension, your clients can balance their cover based on their insurance needs. For example, Early-Stage melanomas which have high rates of survival, can be covered by their Crisis Recovery policy. Should the cancer progress to a 3 or 4, their Crisis Extension policy could provide additional financial support to clients.
