Well winter has well and truly started, and particularly in the southern states it’s only going to get colder and wetter.
So what does that mean to you in regards to exercising? Does winter to you generally mean going into hibernation, snuggling up mentally and physically, and writing exercise off for the next few months?
While that does sound good and I’m all for snuggling on the couch with a good book and a hot cup of tea, you can still embrace the elements, get outside and make the most of winter, and here’s five reasons why you should do so.
1. You’ll burn more calories. When you’re cold, your body has to work harder to regulate its core temperature, the result of this is you’ll burn more calories during a winter workout compared to when you are already warm.
2. It's good for your heart. Not only is your body working harder to maintain its temperature but your heart also works harder to distribute blood throughout your body.
For someone who exercises regularly, this is great news, as a winter work out makes the heart muscle even stronger.
3. You'll drink more water. It’s easy to huddle over a hot drink in winter but continuing to exercise will encourage you to stay hydrated and drink more water. Always a good thing!
4. You’ll dose up on Vitamin D. It may be cold but when the sun is shining, you’ll still receive the same dose of this critical nutrient as you would during the warmer months. Why is this important? Well, Vitamin D boosts your immune system and helps you fight diseases, it helps reduce depression and can help boost weight loss!
5. Go on – get happy. Believe it or not, exercising in the cold weather can really improve your mood. The amount of endorphins the body produces increases as the body it works harder to stay warm, leaving you with a stronger sense of happiness and wellbeing.
Need another reason to embrace winter exercising? Well you know what they say – A summer body is made in winter!
So get out there and get moving!!
One more thing - it’s obviously important to dress appropriately for the cooler weather, so why not check out the awesome Jaggad range – remember AIA Vitality members get a cool 30% off the entire range!
