Jane* was a 46 year old general manager when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2017. After undergoing treatment for her cancer, Jane unfortunately developed post-surgery infection. She was referred to the AIAA rehab team in October 2018, who recognised that she may benefit from the rehabilitation programs. Jane was initially apprehensive about taking part in the program; though ended up agreeing to give it a go. The face to face support she received helped her deal with her fatigue, improved her endurance and gave her a routine, facilitating her recovery and assisting her on her return to wellness and her goal of returning to work.
While the exercise program helped Jane enough to return to work in a full time capacity, she ultimately chose to resign from her pre-disablement role, so that she could focus on striking a better work-life balance. Her claim was finalised in January 2019; it being concluded that Jane would benefit from engaging with an occupational rehabilitation provider who would help her with further coaching to establish a suitable return to work goal, and provide strategies for managing her employment. Jane worked with the provider to establish that she was interested in completing consulting work and together they implemented strategies that set her on a course to achieving this goal. With the assistance of the rehabilitation provider, Jane was able to secure a six week contract for consulting work, and established herself on three boards. What’s more, Jane also became involved in a local cancer survivorship EP group. At the conclusion of the program, Jane described vocational counselling as “invaluable” and indicated that she would highly recommend the rehabilitation program to anyone who found themselves in similar circumstances.
