Beyond Blue is one of Australia’s most well-known, trusted, and visited mental health organisations. It is a big blue door for many in the community: a safe and reliable place for millions of people to access information, advice and support – whether they’re well and want to stay that way, unsettled or struggling and need support, or in recovery and want to reconnect1.
About Beyond Blue
The challenge we face
Key statistics include:
- Australian mental health insurance claims have almost doubled in the past five years, and mental ill-health now drives nearly one in three Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) and one in five Income Protection (IP) claims2.
- On average, mental health claimants spend more time out of the workforce than those claiming for physical illnesses and injuries; workers’ compensation data indicate almost five times longer3.
- Further, Australians are permanently exiting the workforce due to mental ill-health earlier in their working lives than ten years ago; the number of people in their 30s with mental health-related TPD claims has increased by over 700%4.
- Preventative strategies and timely, evidence-based treatment can reduce the risk of mild to moderate symptoms becoming chronic, while supporting people to remain in or return to work.
