About the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute

The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is Australia’s only medical research institute dedicated to tackling heart disease and diabetes – two of the biggest health challenges facing our community.

Their work spans prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and they collaborate closely with government, industry, and communities to drive better health outcomes. Ultimately, their mission is to reduce death and disability from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other health related disorders.

The challenge we face

Diabetes and heart disease are growing concerns across Australia – and they’re conditions we see regularly in the AIA claims experience, either as primary or secondary conditions, often leading to longer, more complex recoveries.1

Key statistics include:
  • One in twenty (5.3% or 1.3 million) people in Australia had diabetes in 20222
  • Diabetes prevalence across the country has slowly increased from 3.3% in 2001 to 5.3% in 20223
  • One in twenty (5.2% or 1.3 million) people had heart, stroke and vascular disease in 20224
The upward trend reinforces the need for stronger awareness, prevention, and long-term health strategies.

An AIA Embrace partnership

As part of our AIA Embrace ecosystem, we’ve partnered with the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute to strengthen our understanding of heart disease and diabetes to better support the communities we work with.

Through this collaboration, we tap into expert advice, share insights with our partners, and contribute to broader conversations around prevention and long-term wellbeing. It’s a partnership that not only informs our approach, but also supports the vital work the Institute does to improve health outcomes across Australia.
