Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) CORE provides meaningful protection for severe and permanent disability, with clearer claim assessment criteria, improved premium certainty and lower premiums than traditional TPD cover.*
1. Comprehensive cover
TPD CORE retains the key protection features advisers and clients value. Most claims are assessed in the same way as traditional TPD, with additional criteria applied to mental health and certain specified complex conditions to better assess severity, permanence and functional impact.
2. Greater clarity at claim time
As mental health and other specified-condition claims have become more prevalent, we've included additional assessment criteria for TPD CORE policies. The additional criteria help ensure assessments are conducted using a clear and evidence-based approach meaning clients are assessed consistently.
The ratings are based on:
- Medical evidence: Supporting clinical evidence and specialist assessment.
- Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale (PIRS): PIRS is an independently recognised assessment tool that evaluates the impact of a psychiatric condition on a person's daily functioning and is used to assess mental illness claims.
- Functional impact: How a condition affects a person's ability to function in daily life and work.
- Permanence: Whether the condition remains stable despite ongoing treatment and rehabilitation.
3. Lower premiums compared to traditional TPD
TPD CORE has been designed to address key drivers of claims volatility while supporting improved affordability and premium certainty. So, whether you have clients applying for TPD cover for the first time or who currently hold an existing Priority Protection (PP) TPD policy, they could save on premiums by applying for TPD CORE.
The table below highlights the potential savings that both new and existing PP clients may achieve.
Scenario | TPD sum insured | TPD CORE Any | TPD CORE Own |
| Low TPD SI (new policies) | $0 and ≤ $1.5m
| Up to 5% cheaper
| Up to 15% cheaper
|
High TPD SI (new policies)
| Greater than $1.5m
| Up to 20% cheaper
| Up to 30% cheaper
|
Inforce PP TPD
| All SI
| Up to 10% cheaper
| Up to 20% cheaper
|
The scenarios above compare like-for-like policy structures. For example, when a client applies for a new TPD CORE Own Occupation policy with a sum insured greater than $1.5 million, they could save up to 30% compared with a traditional TPD Own Occupation policy.
Clients with an in-force PP traditional TPD Own Occupation policy who choose to switch to TPD CORE Own Occupation could save up to 20%.
4. TPD CORE Five-year rate guarantee
Similar to our Income Protection (IP) CORE five-year rate guarantee^, which has remained free from rate increases due to repricing since it’s inception, TPD CORE also includes a rate guarantee.
The TPD CORE five-year rate guarantee helps reinforce the long-term value of the recommended cover and reduces the risk of premium shock leading to policy cancellations or reductions in cover. For clients, it offers peace of mind that premiums remain predictable, allowing them to focus on their financial goals while maintaining the insurance cover they need.
NOTE: Premiums may still change during the guarantee period as a result of factors such as changes to age, policy fee increases, government charges, discounts rolling off, benefit changes, or a change in premium frequency.
5. Lump Sum payment
By providing a lump sum payment, clients can focus more on what matters most without having to provide ongoing justification for their claim.
The payment can be used to cover everyday living expenses, medical and rehabilitation costs, pay down debts such as a mortgage, or fund necessary lifestyle adjustments. By providing immediate access to a significant amount of money, TPD CORE helps reduce financial stress and allows clients to focus on what matters most, themselves and their families.
6. No automatic indexation
No automatic indexation helps keep cover aligned to changing client needs and can help reduce premium drift over time.
This supports a more active protection management approach by encouraging regular review of cover levels as client circumstances change.
7. 30-day cooling off period
Clients considering a move from their existing PP TPD cover to TPD CORE can access a 30-day cooling-off period, providing additional flexibility and peace of mind.
8. Available with Own and Any Occupation options
As with traditional TPD, TPD CORE still gives clients the option to choose between Own or Any Occupation.
By offering both Occupation choices, we’re still giving clients the flexibility to tailor their TPD cover to meet their professional needs, financial goals and budgets, ensuring we're providing clients with more options based on their circumstances.
9. Complements IP cover
TPD CORE complements IP CORE by reducing policy overlap. Both products support clients at different points.
For example, if a client applies for an IP CORE policy with a 2 or 5-year benefit period, their policy will support them where they are impacted by short-term ailments or conditions where the symptoms fluctuate. TPD CORE supports clients where these ailments are long-term requiring further financial support.
* Savings of up to 30% are based on a comparison between a new client applying for TPD CORE Own Occupation cover with a sum insured above $1.5 million and traditional TPD Own Occupation cover.
^IP CORE 5-year rate guarantee applies to 2 and 5-year benefit periods only.
