With the newspapers transfixed on the COVID-19 crisis, we’ve gone digging for The Good News. Because the warm and fuzzies are pandemic-proof.
During a time when the vast majority of the world’s population are confined to their homes, Captain Tom Moore took to walking laps of his garden in a bid to raise money for the UK’s National Health Service.
As of last week, he’d raised AUD $55.4 million – a feat that not only united a nation and garnered admiration from around the world, but broke the Guinness World Record for the most money raised by a sponsored walk in the process.
As if that wasn’t enough, he then recorded a version of Gerry & The Pacemakers’ ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ with Canadian singer Michael Ball (and a choir consisting of NHS staff). The single rocketed straight to No. 1 on the charts.

While the pandemic has many people feeling as though they’re ‘climbing the walls’, one 15-year-old climbing fanatic took the expression to the next level by building an eight-foot climbing wall in her bedroom. “I just shut my door, put my music in and started drilling,” Erin Sloan told Good News Network. “I was very proud when I was done – the first thing I did was call my dad and show him the pictures.”
The teenager hopes the news generated from her lockdown DIY inspires other girls around the world to take up climbing too. “I’m a girl and climbing isn’t a female-dominated sport,” she said. “That’s something that drew me to do this.”
Videos have emerged from Rhode Island, New England, where hospitals have been blasting the theme song from Rocky to discharged coronavirus patients. We don’t know about you – but if we just won a 10-round bout with this virus, we’d be pretty pleased to hear that particular tune at the end of it.
