You asked, we answered.
What are the best stomach/waist exercises I can do to maximise weight loss and tightening around my middle?
Vicky, NSW
Let’s head to Chris Judd’s article for this one – back in June, Chris wrote an article about the problem of focusing on specific areas on the body when it comes to exercise. It’s a good read – we recommend giving it all a browse – but the core message is that you need to be exercising your body in a holistic way in order to see noticeable differences (such as the tightening around the waist that you mention).
Chris points out that you can’t spot-reduce fat – you lose it from everywhere. That said, what you want to achieve (in terms of your body shape) will dictate the types of exercise that you do. Resistance training may be good if you want to burn fat for health reasons. Chris suggests focusing on the biggest muscle groups in the body – your glutes, quads, or leg muscles – as, “building these muscles gives you a higher metabolic rate, meaning you’re more likely to lose fat while building muscle.”
