Marika Day’s new app, fuelled, looks to redefine our definition of ‘healthy’.
Since I began working as a dietitian, I felt there was something was fundamentally wrong with our culture around health and nutrition.
One of the first clients I saw was a 15-year-old girl, still in high school. She walked in, with a photo of a fitness influencer and asked how to look like her – thin, lean and smiling at the camera. I was stunned – that image was the height of success and wellbeing for this girl. It was a revelation; so many of us have a warped perception of how to measure health, and how you must have a specific body shape to be healthy.
This became a recurring theme over the years: women with unhealthy relationships with food or their body and thinking a diet would solve their problem. This was the catalyst that eventually became fuelled.
We named this app fuelled for a reason: we should be focusing on properly fuelling our bodies for our health, rather than restricting what we eat.
Our wellbeing isn’t about size and shape; it’s about balance. Good health considers all aspects of your life, including mental health, lifestyle and proper nutrition. That’s the primary goal of fuelled: being a platform where people can learn how to work with their own body and mind first, rather than turning to diet culture as their primary solution.
We’re not saying there’s a “best way to eat” with fuelled. Instead, we believe there are so many ways you can eat that are good for your health. We’ll help you find the path that’ll work for you and your lifestyle. Our end goal is for you to have the confidence to make informed decisions about your diet, which give you freedom and flexibility in your lifestyle.
We have access to a wealth of information and misinformation on the internet, and sometimes it can be tricky to know who and what to believe. We're looking to address this with fuelled – all content is based on the latest evidence-based research in the nutrition and healthcare space.
A big part of the development process also came from my community and clients. I discussed what they needed and what would be helpful and incorporated it into the app. This way, fuelled can integrate seamlessly into people’s lives, rather than users having to make sacrifices. This means less time stressing over restaurant menus, and more time enjoying time with your friends and family – these are the real moments that matter in a healthy lifestyle.
When fuelled launches in June, you can expect healthy, delicious and easy recipes, mini courses to help you live a healthy balanced life and meditations to build confidence and reduce stress. Just don’t expect any weigh-ins or transformation pictures – these are misleading and don’t paint an accurate picture of healthiness.
The idea behind fuelled has been stewing in my brain for over seven years, and I’m incredibly excited to see it out in the world. I’ll be sharing more about fuelled’s features soon, so stay tuned.
