What Australian health trends are showing us
Understanding the health conditions behind insurance claims offers valuable insight into the broader wellbeing of Australians.

AIA’s group insurance claims data reflects not just individual circumstances, but national health trends that continue to shape the lives of members and their families. Drawing on research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), there is a clear connection between the most common claim causes and the chronic conditions affecting millions of Australians today.

According to AIHW:

  • Chronic conditions contribute to nearly 9 in 10 deaths in Australia and are a leading cause of long-term work incapacity1. These include cancer and musculoskeletal disorders—all major drivers of group insurance claims.
  • Mental health disorders are increasingly common, with 1 in 5 Australians experiencing a mental health condition in any given year2. Mental health was the leading cause of Income Protection claims (29%) and a major factor in TPD claims (31%).
  • Musculoskeletal conditions, such as arthritis and chronic back pain, affect nearly 30% of Australians3 and were responsible for 22% of Income Protection and 23% of TPD claims.
  • Accidents and injuries also play a significant role, contributing to 12% of Income Protection, 15% of Death, and 12% of TPD claims.
