Paul's story
In 2005, at the age of 32, Paul* was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Fortunately, he had an Income Protection Policy and was able to begin his treatment and recovery without the additional worry of maintaining his income.
After two surgeries and extensive rehabilitation he unfortunately suffered a stroke, which affected the right side of his body giving him very little movement. Medical reports confirmed that Paul would not be able to return to his role as a Sales Manager and in 2008 a Total and Permanent Disablement claim was paid through AIA Australia.
Over the next six years Paul determinedly continued with his rehabilitation and in 2014 he decided he felt physically strong enough to begin exploring his return to work options.
Our Rehabilitation Team arranged a referral to Sue*, a local vocational rehabilitation provider with expertise in both neurological conditions and return to work. Working together they explored suitable work and training options to develop a tailor made program to get him back into the workforce.
After three months of research and work experience, the role of Teacher’s Aide was identified as a good fit and Paul has now begun studying Education Support at TAFE. Our Rehabilitation Consultant is working closely with Paul as he embarks on his study program and continues his recovery journey.
